BENGALURU: At a time when central and state governments are facing criticism from farmers over agricultural laws, the Karnataka Department of Agriculture is calling on ‘Challenging Star’ Darshan to inspire aspiring farmers to take up farming farming.
Darshan, who is in agriculture himself, said he would try to publicize government programs that will benefit farmers and bridge the gap between farmers and the department. After Minister of Agriculture BC Patil took the initiative, the actor agreed to be the ambassador for the ministry’s programs without receiving any remuneration from the government.
The process was officially kicked off on Saturday when the agriculture commissioner wrote to the additional chief secretary of the agriculture department, asking for an order to be issued appointing the actor as an ambassador for the department.
“Many educated young people do not go into farming and migrate to cities in search of employment. We need to educate young people about agriculture and how it can be profitable. As an ambassador, Darshan will be able to inspire many young people to take up farming and also boost farmers’ self-esteem,” said Minister Patil, who is an actor-turned-politician himself.
Patil said that when he first pitched the idea to the actor, he readily agreed and agreed to work with them to help farmers. Agriculture Department sources said the decision to ask the actor to be ambassador had nothing to do with current developments related to farmer protests.
