On Friday, the Department of Agriculture of Kathua organized a visit of 50 farmers to Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu, so that they could improve their farming practices. “This visit was organized as part of the ATMA program, also known as the National Agriculture and Technology Mission (NMAT). A group of 50 farmers visited SKUAST to learn new farming techniques and production of quality crops from scientists,” said Om Prakash Bhagat, District Kathua Development Commissioner when announcing the event.
Bhagat also said that scientists from the University will also answer questions from farmers regarding soil and land. They will also solve the problems farmers face while growing their crops. Talking about the purpose of the visit, OP Bhagat said that this visit will sensitize the farmers on various scientific and modern agricultural practices.
“Farmers are excited about the exhibition tour. Farmers in the Kandi belt region facing the threat of monkeys will join the tour to get solutions to their problem from experts,” he said. he said while calling on them to adopt modern farming techniques to double their farm incomes. Pawan Kumar Sharma, a farmer who was among them, said: “Our region mainly depends on agriculture. We face many difficulties, including the threat of monkeys. Whatever information we receive from the University, we will implement it.
Farmers have a number of questions regarding crop production, multiple farming, and doubling farmers’ income with minimum production cost. Farmers will interact with agricultural experts and scientists to get their questions answered. Kathua Director of Agriculture, Vijay Kumar Upadhaya briefed the farmers on the various departmental programs. He called on farmers to follow modern farming techniques and benefit from government-sponsored schemes.
